Vodafone treats international calls and roaming as two different things with two different sets of prices, and mixing them up is a common cause of surprise bills. Phoning your cousin in Australia from your sofa in London is an international call. Using your phone to find a restaurant while you're in Australia is roaming.

International calls vs roaming

An international call is when you are physically in the UK, using your Vodafone SIM to dial a number in another country. The call crosses a border, but you don't. These calls have their own per-minute rates, from 24p a minute to the EU to over £2 a minute to some countries.

A suitcase and phone sit beside a bench in a quiet train station.

Roaming is using your phone while you're abroad. Your Vodafone SIM connects to a local partner network in the country you're visiting, so you can make calls, send texts and use data much as you would at home.

In short:

  • International call: you're in the UK and you call a number in Spain, India or the USA.
  • Roaming: you're in Spain, India or the USA and you call any number, whether it's a local restaurant or your mate back in the UK.

Vodafone prices roaming by Global Roaming zone. Most of Europe is in Zone B, the USA and Australia are in Zone C, and India and the UAE are in Zone D, each with its own daily charge for using your UK allowance. A calling app over Wi-Fi avoids them, but Vodafone's own Wi-Fi Calling doesn't work while roaming. Our guide explains how Wi-Fi Calling works.

Calling abroad from the UK

The most reliable way to dial an international number from your mobile is to start with the plus sign (+). It stands in for the UK's exit code (00) and works wherever you are in the world. After the +, type the country code and then the local number, dropping the leading zero if it has one. For example:

  • USA: +1, then the area code and the rest of the number.
  • India: +91, then the ten-digit mobile number.
  • Pakistan: +92, then the local number.

Standard per-minute rates

Without an Extra, calls go on Vodafone's standard international rates. These are the Pay Monthly prices from 14 April 2026, with a one-minute minimum charge, from Vodafone's out-of-bundle price page (checked 3 October 2026):

Calling from the UK to Per minute
EU and EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) 24p
Channel Islands and Isle of Man 75p
Rest of Europe £2.09

Vodafone lists rates for other countries, including the USA, India and Pakistan, in its calling-abroad checker, so look up the country before a long call.

Vodafone International Call Extras

If you call abroad every month, an Extra costs less than standard rates. Each one adds a monthly bundle of minutes from the UK to a list of countries that includes India, Pakistan and the USA. Prices from 12 May 2026, from the same Vodafone page:

  • International Saver 100: £6.95
  • International Saver 500: £14
  • Call Abroad Extra: £14 for 75 minutes, £21.05 for 125 minutes, £28.10 for 200 minutes

Used in full, the International Saver 500 works out at under 3p a minute. You can manage Extras in the My Vodafone app.

Using your Vodafone phone abroad

Which zone you're heading to decides what you pay, so check it before you go and you won't get a surprise bill when you get home. In some destinations you use your phone just as you do in the UK. In others you pay a daily fee to unlock your usual plan's data, minutes and texts.

Vodafone's roaming zones

Zones and daily charges from Vodafone's roaming page and out-of-bundle price page (checked 3 October 2026), for Pay Monthly plans that don't already include roaming in that zone:

  • Zone A covers the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Iceland and Norway. All Pay Monthly plans include it, so you use your UK allowance as at home.
  • Zone B covers 47 European destinations, including France, Spain, Poland and Greece. Using your UK plan there costs £2.75 a day, or you can buy an 8-day pass for £16 or a 15-day pass for £21.
  • Zone C includes the USA, Australia, Mexico and Turkey. Using your UK plan there costs £8 a day.
  • Zone D covers 73 more destinations, including Egypt, India, Morocco, Thailand and the UAE. The daily charge is also £8.
  • Everywhere else falls into four Rest of the World zones, where calls are charged per minute.

What roaming costs on a real trip

Take a weekend city break in Paris (Zone B). If you use your phone for maps or to call a restaurant, you pay the £2.75 daily charge, so a two-day trip costs £5.50 to use your phone as you would at home.

A week-long work trip to New York (Zone C) costs £8 for every day you use your plan there, £56 for the week.

Check which zone your destination falls into before you fly, on the Vodafone website or in the My Vodafone app.

Cheaper ways to call abroad

Vodafone's roaming passes and international extras are convenient, but they're not always the cheapest option if you call abroad regularly.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) apps send your call over the internet instead of traditional phone lines, which cuts the cost significantly. That works well for frequent chats with family in Pakistan or regular business calls to clients in the USA. VoIP does need a data connection, so you'll want reliable internet access while travelling.

Where CallSky fits

CallSky is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. It is an alternative to Vodafone's international rates. There's no monthly contract: you top up pay-as-you-go credit and pay low, published per-minute rates to call landlines and mobiles in over 180 countries.

Short trips inside Europe (Zone B) are generally well covered by Vodafone's passes. Once you go further afield, it pays to compare.

When to use Vodafone and when to use CallSky

Vodafone makes sense for quick trips to the EU, where the £2.75 Zone B daily charge or a European pass is an easy choice. It's also fine for the occasional, very short international call from the UK if you can't be bothered with an app.

CallSky makes more sense for calls from abroad over Wi-Fi, for countries the Extras don't cover, and for anyone who calls abroad too rarely for a monthly Extra.

Vodafone vs CallSky

How you call Vodafone CallSky rate
Hundreds of minutes a month to the USA International Saver 500, £14 a month $0.03/min
Around 100 minutes a month to India International Saver 100, £6.95 a month $0.09/min

CallSky rates as of . If you call the same countries every month and use most of the minutes, a Vodafone Extra is hard to beat. CallSky suits occasional calls, countries the Extras don't cover, and calls home from abroad over Wi-Fi, where it avoids the daily roaming charge.

How to avoid bill shock

"Bill shock" is common, but it's almost entirely preventable with a little planning before you go and a few habits while you're away.

Before you start packing, open the My Vodafone app to see exactly what your plan includes for roaming, and set a spending cap. The cap cuts off services if you accidentally hit your limit.

Before you land

As soon as the plane touches down, your phone tries to connect to a local network so it can sync your email, update your apps and download a pile of notifications. That can chew through your data allowance before you've cleared customs.

Turn off data roaming in your phone's settings before you land, which stops background data before it starts. Then find Wi-Fi at the airport or your hotel. Once connected, a calling app such as CallSky (our product) lets you tell everyone you've arrived without paying roaming charges. Vodafone's own Wi-Fi Calling won't do this: its Wi-Fi Calling terms say it is not supported while roaming (checked 3 October 2026). After that, turn roaming on only when you need it.

Use a pass or bundle

Using your phone abroad on standard pay-as-you-go rates is almost always the most expensive option. A roaming pass or an international bundle for your destination gives you a set amount of data, minutes and texts for a fixed daily or weekly price, which costs far less than paying by the minute or megabyte.

Frequently asked questions about Vodafone international calls

How can I find the exact rate for calling a specific country?

Check with Vodafone directly. It's the only way to be sure of the cost, and rates do change. The "Calling Abroad" checker on the official Vodafone UK website gives the latest per-minute rates for both landlines and mobile numbers once you type in the country.

What's the difference between an International Extra and a Roaming Pass?

An International Call Extra is for when you're in the UK and want to call an international number. It's a monthly add-on with a set bundle of minutes, usually much cheaper than the standard per-minute rate. A Roaming Pass is for when you are abroad: it lets you use your UK plan's data, minutes and texts in another country for a fixed daily fee. Extras are for calling out from the UK; passes are for using your phone outside it.

Will I be charged for receiving calls while I'm abroad?

It depends on your plan and where you are, and Vodafone's roaming page doesn't set it out zone by zone. Check your plan in the My Vodafone app before you travel. Vodafone's controls and limits can also block incoming calls and texts abroad, which its roaming page suggests for avoiding surprise charges.

Can I use Wi-Fi Calling to make free international calls?

No. Wi-Fi Calling helps when your mobile signal is poor, but it doesn't make international calls free. If you're in the UK and use it to phone an international number, you'll be charged the standard Vodafone international calls rate for that country. It doesn't help abroad either: Vodafone's Wi-Fi Calling terms say it is not supported while roaming and in general will not work.
